Kinect Sand

Today we made Kinect Sand.

The sand feels like soft sand but you can make it into shapes.

It was soft.

It was fluffy.

It was fun.

We want to make some more.

By Dream, Faith, Te Aroha, Faasao.

If you want to make some Kinetic Sand, the recipe is below.

Supplies
   8 cups flour
   1 cup vegetable oil
Essential oil such as lavender or grapefruit (optional)

Steps
1  Scoop and pour the flour into the center of a large tub.
2  Create a crater in the middle of the flour.
3  Pour the oil into the crater.
4  Gently mix it all together.

Enjoy mixing and learning about the properties of the dough as it is, or add small silicone bowls, spoons, or measuring cups to make small structures, hills, or pretend cupcakes.

Making Orange Juice

Mrs Maguire asked us if we knew how to make orange juice.

We thought about it and here are some ideas.

Then we made it for real.

We needed some oranges and a juice maker and cups.

We cut the fruit.

We put the oranges on the juice maker and then we had to spin and twist it.

You have to squeeze it.

Then we drank it outside.
We even made enough to share with Room 17!

Some people said it was sweet and juicy.
Some people thought it was sour.

Everyone thought it was yummy.

Buddy Time

Today we went to meet our buddy class.

Our buddies are from Room 7.

Room 7 is near the library.

The Room 7 teacher, Mr Clark, read us his favourite story.

It was a good story about a gorilla and kitten.  They were friends.

Then we read our books to our buddies.

Next week we are going to see them again and make lanterns.

We can't wait.

It was very long and cool.
We measured things and people with the train.

We tried to find something that was longer than the train.

We did lots of talking about how long things are.

Below are some photos of the activities.

C'zin shared his ideas about his train.

We looked for something that was longer than the train.
Te Aroha explains what it was below.

We enjoyed learning about Maths through play today.

Fitness Fun!

We love keeping our bodies strong and healthy with fitness.

We like dancing to songs. Some people call it aerobics.

It makes our hearts go boom! It makes our heart go fast!

It is fun.

Our favourite songs are "5 Little Monkeys" and "Gummy Bear".

Maybe you should come and dance with us on Wednesday mornings.

Constable Glenys

Today Constable Glenys came to our room.

She talked to us about her job.

She told us that "Police help people."
They help keep us safe.
Her job is very important.

She showed us her badge.

She showed us her radio and her vest.

Then we went outside to see her police car.

We saw the lights and heard the siren.

It was very loud!

We liked seeing Constable Glenys.

Welcome to 2015!

Today was the first day of the new year!
Room 18 had 10 amazing 5 year olds in our class today. We were all pretty shy, but excited to be at school.

We had a pretty busy day! Check in out below.

First we had time to choose activities we liked. Some of us picked drawing. Some played with the sand or the lego. Some of us made animals with the play dough.

We all had fun!
After that we read a story called In the Garden. It was about an alien exploring the garden.

We talked about what else lives in a garden and wrote stories about it.

Later we did some counting and number work.

We all had a great day and can’t wait for tomorrow. Come back later and see some more of our exciting adventures!
